Back in May 2010 Lori and I went to Big River Wave radio taping at the Big River Theater in Alma Wi. It was a blast, and I would tell you to go but with limited seating I'd be worried eventually we would show up without reservations at the last minute and there wouldn't be chairs for us. So you just stay away and listen to the re-broadcasts Friday night at 6 pm in August on Wisconsin Public Radio. It might not be picked up everywhere... so go drop them a note at www.wpr.com
Besides great music the show has a regular by the name of Mary Mack. I think I want to go back just to see the 10 minutes of Mary. Of course I'm going to brashly add Mary as a regular to The Zemmy Show. She has a great youtube site, but don't subscribe to it. I'll post the good ones here.
Since then I hosted Mary at our house concert... she was a tremendous hit. Everyone loved her and can't wait to see her again. Here she is on with her gang banger song...

It's been a while since Allison posted any new video... is this weird... but wasn't there a show about watching Ed alll day... ok I just want her to sit down once a day, sing a song and post it... ok I suppose that's what happens in heaven... until then, I'll take a few glimpse of heaven.

This song is without a doubt my favorite Old Crow Medicine Show song. The pedigree of this song is a bit interesting, however. It seems it's an unreleased song that may or may not be from Bob Dylan, but most likely is. Then the fiddler/singer from OCMS added his own lyrics. From the only lyric sheet I found of the original Bob version, it sounds like he added the majority of the verses, if not all.
This song was actually originally called "Rock Me Mama" and was recorded in Mexico in 1972 for the Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid movie. However, it was never released and was never actually finished either. The only part existing at that point was the chorus.
The verses were added in by a guy named Ketch Secor, the lead singer of a bluegrass band called Old Crow Medicine Show, who released this finished version of the song a few years ago. It's by far their most popular song and is incredible to hear played live. Recently, Ketch went on a radio station and explained the origins of the song:
"It'd be my pleasure to dispel the myth and rumor about the song Wagon Wheel, or "Rock Me Mama" as Bob Dylan himself called the song when he recorded it down in Mexico in 1972 for the soundtrack of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. This song was not released, and it was not finished either, this is a demo of a practice session of him, Rob Stoner, and a couple of gals doing the chorus over and over again while the bass player learns the bass line. That's what I heard on a German bootleg about nine years ago in high school. And I wrote the lyrics to the song because I loved the chorus so much and I sung it in my head for maybe a year straight, and then just penned what I penned, which is something of an autobiographical story about just wanting to get outta town, gettin outta school, and just wanting to go play music. It's sort of autobiographical like that. But yeah, it's sort of a Bob Dylan co-write with about 25 years inbetween."

Ok... it's been a few weeks since Allison played my fledgling house concert series... and I'm still getting goosebumps listening to her cover of Spoon River... I promise to share it... until then, I noticed I never posted this little photo montage to her wonderful gospel tinged love song.
Hey I still think I discovered them.... HA. I know, I know... you are all convinced I'm a push over for a woman with a violin; and while I resemble that remark.... look at the cute one tucked under the speaker playing piano. Oh yeah they play pretty well too.
So a few weeks ago we had Ashley Rose, so next my favorite pop queen from Vancouver, Rose Reiter. Dave liking pop music? Well ok you got me on that one, but she really has some excellent soft ballads, and did you see how beautiful she is? I admit my sin of falling easily in love, but looks are really just part of the equation. Eyes, passion, spirit, and yes humor all are essential parts, and then I've effectively gone.
Her blogs have been mixed with fictional intrigue, personal updates, poetry, and yes recipes; and that's what made me hang around. Now I hear she'll use her blog to tease us with her fictional novel she's writing. But I do love her passion she brings to her music, and she did what good people do... she hung around and made friends with me. Well enough that I can appreciate her kindness.
Her father recently passed away, so she hasn't blogged for ages, this week... two new ones including a recipe I thought I would share with you straight from her blog:
And in case you're wondering what I did end up eating for supper - a very simple and easy Italian dish: Tonight's recipe: 10 minutes to make. Seriously. And it rocks with Chianti Savoury Mediterranean Angel hair pasta 3/4 C Extra virgin olive oil 3 - 6 cloves of garlic - sliced thin (I used 4 tonight) Basil leaves - a few. Sliced. (you can use scissors - easy breezy) 1/2 teaspoon of dried chili skin- the dried chillies - just grab the skin and crumble enough to your taste. (If you're new to this, then just use dried cayenne powder - just a pinch. And you can avoid this spice if you want). About 3 - 6 kalamata Olives - Pit them and slice thin About a cube of feta cheese - crumbled About a cube of goat cheese (if you like - totally optional) Salt (And if you want: Add a few sliced artichokes & sliced sundried tomatoes) Angel hair pasta - enough for 2 people. 1 organic bottle of Chianti. For drinking only. Be sure to open it and pour yourself a glass. How: Boil water for angel hair pasta - but since it cooks so fast, don't cook the pasta until you're about 3 minutes away from serving. (Optional: Add lots of salt to the water to flavour.) Take out a medium size saucepan and put about 3/4 C of your olive oil into it and add a few shakes of salt (to your taste). Low - Medium heat at the highest - tonight, I kept it under medium and turned it down to low after about 2 minutes. Now, slice 3-4 cloves of garlic - really thin. (You can use more if you'd like). Add the garlic to the heated olive oil - and watch! Don't allow the oil to brown the garlic too much - just slow and low heat. Add the olives and the basil to the oil. Turn off the heat and allow the heat in the pan to cook the rest.
Cook your angel hair pasta - should take less than 3 minutes. Drain, put into a bowl, and immediately pour all the olive oil sauce over the pasta. Add feta, goat cheese, and I like to serve parmesan at the table.

Now that I have video's of my own, this video is the only one that graces my profile page at MySpace, why? Besides the fact I don't want to scare visitors off, I do believe that a blessing from Allison is worth the grace of love 100 times better than an old Zeman Video. Of course was I tickled when I went to get the words and found even THE Google knew how strong of a video it is.
Our regular Allison Sattinger and her musical brother Matt Coleman are again touring in May, but this video was put together before their trip through Arizona. Now if he doesn't harken you back to a young Kenny Rankin. Of course I'm also tickled that these two have saved a space for me, or even you if your are in the vicinity of LaCrosse WI. May 27th (yes it's a Wednesday) they will be playing a house concert at the Bluff View Concerts. Now the weird day is because it sandwiched in between the Twin Cities and Chicago.... Yes we're smaller markets, but let's out draw them ;-).
This is also the video where Allison tells the world Matt is in her Top Eight, but if you go over there... see what other special old fart adopted uncle is in her top eight... (ME) I think I found Allison nearly three years ago thru MySpace and not only have gotten her a few extra fans, I have fallen in love with her like she's one of the family. She has such passion and love in her life. I lived thru her job changes, her hurts, her losses, and her excitement of marriage and now a move from Los Angeles to Northern California. I can't wait to give her a big hug in May.
Allison recently released a wonderful Cd with this song on it... I love her choice of white.... She is an angel, and Anthony (of Schmillly) is the luckiest man I know... today.

I love Allison's vocal skills and she really has enough You Tube posts to be a regular on the show, maybe once a week. This was one of her first songs she posted on YouTube, and I personally think it's better than Brandi Carlile's original version. I hope I don't get buried in negative press over that comment; but it's true this song was meant to be sung to understand every word.
