NPR Lists

I found this link through Lake Street Dive's Facebook page... it includes Elephant Revival a band that my son recommended to me.  I like when a list includes free music.

I shall be released

I told you I'm going to be dangerous now that I've figured out how do these video things. Friday night had no gigs, no practice, but it did have an occasional teenager walking in the doors behind me.... I made it three plus minutes to record without distraction and did the song we cover in Rose River ever since I shared a cover it by Jack Johnson on The Band cover collection called Endless Highway. That link says it's available free there.... go for it... I own the cd.

Tim, Paula, and Shelly make me sound a lot better live... we have a few private parties, so the next time we're at the Freight House is my birthday weekend Friday and Saturday around May 2nd.

Tom Waits from 1974

Truly a find...even better if it's free, either way worth a listen

I follow the ww.aquariumdrunkard.com blog, and this one looks real interesting... so instead of me forgetting about it, I thought I'd share it on the show.

Per the blog:

This KPFK radio session from 1974, recorded for the Folkscene program, finds Waits between his Closing Time LP and its follow up The Heart of Saturday Night. Amazing stuff - a snapshot in time of a young Waits just off touring the southeast with Frank Zappa. PS - Don’t skip the interviews.

And they are all there to enjoy... Not sure yet if it's free, but if it's on the computer that's almost there any who....

Grand Cariboo Opry

Can you believe it... I'm home sick again. I slept for 18 hours straight... now... groggy but up and need something to raise my pulse. Barney Bentall put together a fun group including my favorite country / world fiddler Kendel Carson.

I works great just to click here and go play the whole dang cool concert.

Here's how the website describes it: The Grand Cariboo Opry is a highly entertaining old tyme variety show.

Barney Bentall hosts the proceedings and is joined by a mess of talented musicians. Everyone plays and everyone sings....sometimes all at once! It's a night chock-full of music, humour, warm wit and unique sponsorship promotions reminiscent of bygone days.

Don't miss a great night at the Opry!

Free music with Sarah Siskind

Get it now... it won't last.

Sarah's MySpace and her website says this is a limited offering. I really wondered if I should put Rose River up on Noise Trade and try the same thing; but even the cheapest deal they offer is $75. Since we're a local band, it doesn't make much sense to get mailing addresses to announce concerts. Still looking for good cheap promotion ideas though... any one got one, let me know. Until then, I'll keep sharing you the free stuff that I'm trying... but be known there is a ton of stuff on that Noise Trade site.

It intrigued me in Sarah's comparison to Gillian Welch and Joni Mitchell, but check out who also has covered the songs she wrote, an impressive list.

The Wolf Den: LBD Preview - "Way Of The World"

From Contributing Editor Clay Riness
Editor In Chief, The Weary Wolf Journal

Here's a second installment of our Little Black Dress preview. My description? Greg Brown meets old-time music. Don't ask.

Listen to Way Of The World:

The Way Of The World
By
Clay Riness, Brett Huus, Terry Nirva

(Note: Drop D tuning: DADGBE)

There’s a place in the world for a woman and a man
and you can’t wait around for a miracle to happen.
A man’s got a fire that will burn him up inside
and a woman’s got a fire that can take him for a ride.

So a man tips his hat and he gives a little smile
and a woman smiles back and they visit for awhile.
Then the woman sends a message that she maybe wants more
and the man takes the cue and he shows her to the door.

A little bit of sugar couldn’t do him any harm
so he turns to the woman and he wraps her in his arms
And the woman plays along ‘cause the game is what it is
and they both melt away in a passionate kiss.

Tell me what can you say when it happens all the time?
It’s the way of the world when two people are inclined.
When a man and a woman play a dangerous game
it can open up a door to a lifetime of blame.

Paint me in Love - free song

This piece actually has roots back in 1976. It was normal for me to write and write because I was kind of a loner. All that changed with Lori and a real job, but back in 2004 I started back up again. By the next year, I found myself reading my old journals and poems. The first verse was just sitting there waiting for me; lesson for us all, clean up your life, but don't throw away your journals.

In honor of Valentine's day.... even if you read this late... I'll send you a mp3 of this if you email your request to dave@theroseriverband.com

If I could draw
a face dear and warm
With eyes of passion
Smooth lines would form

Paint me in love, As soft as a dove
Sketch out a dream Someone barely seen
Lead me to draw The beauty that I saw
Paint me in love, with light from above

If I could draw
The fine lines of age
There’d be folds of love,
And beauty on a page

Paint me in love, As soft as a dove
Sketch out a dream Someone barely seen
Lead me to draw The beauty that I saw
Paint me in love, with light from above

If I could draw
Sensual curves of shade
Pleading deep dark eyes
and dimples concave

Free Music with Katie Herzig

I can't believe that in one week I received two of these widgets for free music. I love it, bring it one. Katie I found on a best of 2008 list. It was in Women Folk Top 10 Albums of the yearthat I found her... BTW... I loved the two songs that I had immediately downloaded to give me a taste of her CD Songbird and Gypsy Girl... Innovative... and with a lot of life.

Well the download is done... off to listen to new music....now back later... wow... I HIGHLY recommend this sampler.

Lauren Zettler.... Zemmy winning Free Concert

I am lucky to have run into Lauren somewhere in the vast MySpace music world. She won the coveted Freebie award this year, and you can get your own copy of the concert at : www.laurenzettler.com/liveinla. This is a precious timing of the post because Lauren is a huge Brandi fan and she didn't post a negative word about the Allison cover comment.

Download MaryKate O'Neil's New Album for Free!

Hey Folks! Dave was so kind as to invite me to be a guest correspondent, so here we go with my first post on The Zemmy Show! ~ Heather

I was lucky enough to interview MaryKate O'Neil on Lyrical Venus Radio back in November. Her quirky lyrics and retro-pop sensibilities were a sure guarantee that her songs would get pleasantly stuck in my head.

Her new album Underground is due out in February 09, but MaryKate is giving fans a chance to get it for free right now! What's the catch? You have to tell five friends who you think might like it about the album. Hey, sharing music is what we like to do here anyway right? That shouldn't be so hard. But if it IS too hard to come up with five friends, or you feel like supporting MaryKate monetarily, you also have the option to pay whatever you want, and MaryKate will get 90% of whatever you give! This is the whole album folks, not just one song. Nifty, no?

Here's the widget where it all happens! (Click on the album cover to preview songs.)

If you like it, you can even embed the widget in YOUR blog, website or social networking site of choice! Just click the "embed this widget" part at the top and copy the appropriate code.

Check out NoiseTrade for other musicians doing the same thing.

The best free songs

I will share when an artist shares, and this song started a love affair that both my Wife and Lissa have done their best to ignore... HA...

What a wonderful cover of an old song, and it really did start my love of Lissa Schneckenburger's vocal styling. I found that many of her songs available where instrumentals, nice but I loved the voice. She eventually emailed that I should be patient her next cd was called Song and it would have singing through out. It was, it is and continues to be wonderful. So much it won the Traditional CD of the year.

Now go to this link folkalley.com/openmic/song.php?id=461" , subscribe to Folk Alley by merely giving them your email, and you can download this wonderful song and start your own love affair.
