London on my mind...

This week a friend Natalie Gelman got to London to start her European tour and posted these pics:

Then Kelley McRae who will play our House Concert series in September posted her walking in a tunnel in London under the river Thames.

London on my mind I picked up the guitar and googled the words to Leaving London by Tom Paxton... it's actually funny to read because he had to go American Express to try to get a letter from home, no text or internet for Tom.

Then I moved to another song I know from Ralph McTell that I learned from playing of Fred Holstein I did have to google the words again, but the music was like riding a bike.

Have you seen the old man
In the closed-down market
Kicking up the paper,
with his worn out shoes?
In his eyes you see no pride
Hand held loosely at his side
Yesterday's paper telling yesterday's news

So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind

Have you seen the old girl
Who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags?
She's no time for talking,
She just keeps right on walking
Carrying her home in two carrier bags.

Chorus

In the all night cafe
At a quarter past eleven,
Same old man is sitting there on his own
Looking at the world
Over the rim of his tea-cup,
Each tea last an hour
Then he wanders home alone

Chorus

And have you seen the old man
Outside the seaman's mission
Memory fading with
The medal ribbons that he wears.
In our winter city,
The rain cries a little pity
For one more forgotten hero
And a world that doesn't care

Chorus

Sparrow by Kelley McRae

So I did fall behind on posting about my 40 day journey of new music, and knew I always catch up on a Saturday morning.  Day 39 will be a lady who played the Root Note and I couldn't make it... I kept kicking myself, and will see her some day, if I have to book her to a house concert to do it.  HA.

This wonderful video had me back to iTunes to add this song to my Kelley McRae music library.

Here is a link to the lyrics:  http://www.lyricsmania.com/sparrow_lyrics_kelley_mcrae.html

And of course it was published on Sunday because I was in the middle of posting this and lightning struck and power went out for 4 hours, and phone/internet was out for 8 hours, then I had a gig, then I had church... now I have a glass of wine in my hand and I'm again enjoying Sparrow.

Kelley McRae

Here's to artists that you don't meet, but almost did.  I believe it was the night I had to finish my annual plan for work when I saw some one had a rare Sunday gig at my favorite La Crosse coffeehouse, The Root Note.  That's when I decided why not listen to her music, and quickly fell in love with her writing and voice, I highly recommend and introduce you to Kelley McRae.  I did find this article when I was researching her (yes while I was simultaneously working on a great annual plan), by CMT and as Johnny would tell you, that you can always trust Nashville.  HA.  So I went to iTunes and feasted on a few songs; and you should too.

and Her Johnny Cash tribute song:

Who knows maybe we'll book her to the fest or my house concert, but I'd be happy if she makes her way back to the Root Note.
