Isn't it obvious that a Hero of mine would have been Willie Nelson, and of his soul of a cowboy...

Heart like a wheel
I don't know much about how or when this 1984 video was made, but Kate and Anna McGarrigle with Linda Ronstadt and one other unidentfied singer put in one awesome performance. Anna wrote the song that became the title track on Linda's fifth solo record. The record was a definite winner with absolutely no dud songs anywhere to be found, and classics... oh my... Willin, Faithless Love, When will I be loved, You're no good.... and the Hank Williams song Linda won her first Grammy for...
Yet how powerful that LP was... this video is absolutely incredible... Happy Valentines day.

Old fart candidate number 2
Ok... ever since Chip Taylor wow'd me by playing with Cari Rodriquez and then Kendal Carson, he has owned the Old Fart of the year. Last year Billy Joe Shaver snuck in because I had three or four people thru the year telling me about him. I'd say, Yep he's always been good. Well this year Chip should win it again with his helping Kendel with her new cd release, and releasing a great solo cd of Yonkers NY; but he has stiff competition from 73 year old Kris Kristofferson. I loved the songs I picked from his new cd, Close to the Bone. Here's a video taste:
And a review from RollingStone Truly the legend has put out new material that fits like a glove into the sound I loved growing up.
Here is how iTunes describes it:

A...hole from El Paso
I can't tell exactly why this song came into my world this year... but it's playing heavily on my playlist that I'm narrowing down the rightful winners.... Classic Kiny Friedman... the guy that should have won the Govenor of Texas race, "why the hell not!"

Charcoal Sky by Chip Taylor
Wow... great song... well I'm a sucker for a good train song, and this is one of them. Per the YouTube desciption
In his nostalgic new video, "Charcoal Sky," esteemed singer-songwriter Chip Taylor reminisces about placing nickels on the rails as a kid and listening to his father chat with the conductors. Taylor sets numerous family stories to music on a new album, Yonkers NY, with one of the two discs bolstered with personal anecdotes. Taylor is most recognized for writing "Wild Thing" and "Angel of the Morning" -- which couldn't be more different -- but throughout his brilliant career he's also placed songs with the likes of Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra and Dusty Springfield. There's also a terrific new Chip Taylor anthology on Ace Records, with dozens of vintage artists offering their own renditions of his work, in case you're in the mood for memories too. Produced by ADC Film www.ADCFilm.com
In keeping with the site's premise, if you don't know Chip... he's the legend that wrote "Angel in the Morning" and "Wild Thing"

Pilgrim by Kris Kristofferson
With the help of Grooveshark.com, I'm rediscovering how much I loved Kris while growing up.
"Going up was worth the coming up".... as a fellow poet all I can say is Amen.
In keeping with the Johnny Cash show theme, this guy is a legend who has survived. The video's notes show that:
Kris Kristofferson performing "The Pilgrim" at the 2007 Ottawa Folk Festival. It was drizzling and near freezing and the man didn't once complain! In fact, he THANKED the fans for sticking around! What a class act!

Shakin' all over
As the YouTube description described this Those Darlins' live cut: The fourteenth song of their set at the Beachland Tavern in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 was this cover of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates' pre-Beatles UK rock classic.
I sure expected the Beatle classic, but it sure wasn't... So who is Johnny Kidd & The Pirates? My thoughts exactly... so I add the Wikipedia link but read on there is a fan club too.
Now this is the closest I can for the original:

Ian Tyson at 75

A few blogs earlier, you might have stopped by the Norah Rendell & Brian Miller link to a CBC concert. Well I was digging around in that site and found one of my favorite legend cowboy singer (yes Clay over Michael), Ian Tyson. I was saddened to hear about his recent voice problems, but now he sounds like the Cowboy version of Rod McKuen... and grew up loving Rod's poetry and his singing crooner songs like, "Listen to the Warm"
Here's the write up from the concert:
Few songwriters have earned the respect to the degree Ian Tyson has. Through more than 40 years of music, he's told us of the pain of love, the dignity of purpose, and the joy of renewal, while helping define what it means to be Canadian.
A few years ago, Tyson damaged his voice while performing. Soon after, he contracted a virus that halted any further recovery. It appeared Ian Tyson's recording and performing days were at an end. But that wouldn't be the 'Cowboy way'. Urged on by his good friend Corb Lund, Tyson wrote and recorded a CD of highly personal songs, 'Yellowhead to Yellowstone and other Love Stories'.
This concert, recorded at Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove, Alberta, was part of Tyson's bi-annual, sold out, 5 night run at the venue.

Hey Clay ... glad for your big night.
Today I tried one more time on the phone to get a ticket for my blog co-writer's concert at the Pump House, and sold out... just like I saw the night before. Maybe this is the coolest thing I've heard of in along time; a folk artist packing the house. Way to go Clay. I'm of course holding out for a private house concert with him and Michael Martin Murphy. Yes ... in my dreams, but I've had many dreams come true.
Including tonight, what you say? Yes our 18 year old son working and absolutely no other commitments, Lori and I had a normal Friday night from the past... a little conversation, a little intimacy, and a night out... boy.. we have, we did, and we still love each other.. So don't worry when I fawn all other my latest artist or actress, it's material for the next lyric or when Lori leaves the world before me. HA... she love's my rendition of my chasing women with a walker....HA.
So tonight.. here's Lori and my favorite song from a legend we've seen a few times... can you believe it had over 1 million views on YouTube?
Dave

Tom Waits from 1974
Truly a find...even better if it's free, either way worth a listen
I follow the ww.aquariumdrunkard.com blog, and this one looks real interesting... so instead of me forgetting about it, I thought I'd share it on the show.
Per the blog:
This KPFK radio session from 1974, recorded for the Folkscene program, finds Waits between his Closing Time LP and its follow up The Heart of Saturday Night. Amazing stuff - a snapshot in time of a young Waits just off touring the southeast with Frank Zappa. PS - Don’t skip the interviews.
And they are all there to enjoy... Not sure yet if it's free, but if it's on the computer that's almost there any who....

Legend Series : Linda & Bonnie
It doesn't get better than this
written by Eric Kaz
I've been romanced dined and danced
Crazy nights and wild times
But my life has lost its mystery
Love is blind and it cannot find me
I'm blowing away
Shadows take my love and leave
I'm blowing away
Shadows keep taking my love and leaving me
And I have cast aside my foolish pride
And I'm going down for the last time
And I have searched this earth
And I've sailed these seas
Love is blind and it cannot find me
I'm blowing away
Shadows take my love and leave
I'm blowing away
Shadows keep taking my love and leaving me
You keep taking my love and leaving me
Thank you Sadie for posting it at your blog.

Legend Series : Steve Goodman
Ok if you never heard of Steve Goodman, you might have heard of The City on New Orleans that was made popular by Arlo Guthrie. So here's the song that David Allen Coe made famous: You never even call me by my name.
