10 songs for Kim...

Kim Niemi Davidson
is a witty, talented woman with a glorious voice. She is fighting uterine cancer and while she is undergoing chemotherapy she is unable to work during this time. I want to help her because she gave me an incredible gift one night... she took a lyric of mine "Opposite Destiny" and turned it into a kick butt song... it was a dark set of words never meant to see the light of day except in my blog release, and she made it darker and wonderful. We traded files until it became a reality. I want you to tip heavily when you go here http://noisetrade.com/luckydog/help-kim and download the ten song, or at least throw a buck or two toward a fine soul that needs help, or just pick Lucky 7 because we all know that's what it will be....

In return I risk Bob Dylan's people coming after me for posting a few covers, but the rest are originals and traditional pieces. Some of them are some of my favorite unreleased projects; including a personal favorite of Ghosts of St. Augustine.

Chicks dig guitars..

So ladies?

http://www.geekosystem.com/science-proves-chicks-dig-guitars/

I know ... you don't need to sing, right?

I have so loved this song for over 30 years... it came up in a random iTunes mix from my 21 days of music on the computer... that and other reasons compelled me to learn it tonight.  The original some is Edgar and a piano... so this version is Dylanized on guitar.

It's in D... and I have to thank the other guy that's on YouTube... his version is more difficult to play than mine, but it's in the same chords he's just playing them up the neck and sometimes partial or diminished.... weird I learned this song on the day that my 86 year old mother died.

Take the Road from my Spine.....

It's pretty much a crappy spring day, and I ain't going to turn on golf... it felt more like the Packers should be on TV when I see snow flying on April 14th.  So I grabbed the book of unfinished songs and finished one.

So here's an original song I started back in 2006.  It's a little dark tale, not sure if the writer is responsible for the death in the third verse, but he enjoyed it.  I consider this my first official murder ballad in a typical Dylan style of never really knowing.

Take the Road

I’m driving two ways at the same time
I’m walking the thin sanity line
With power poles providing measures
My heart pounds from the rhythmic pleasures

I see the horizon over the dashboard
But it’s your love is on a distant shore
I see your face reflected in each sign
But it’s your place I just can’t find

Take the road from my spine
The speed I’m goin’ is a crime
My heart bleeds from the wound

I’m alone with this dark tune

Take the road from my spine

Your twisted barb’s entwined

Take the road, Take the road from my spine

The night green eyes, the whine of the cycle
Fill the air with damp words of trifle
Would you care for a return
A shift in the plans from lessons learned

The black mane of your hair swings wide
Erasing any love you had inside.
Crumpled and tossed out your window at night
Frozen in silence of the oncoming light  (Chorus)

The lights flash red & blue
My heart beats to the tune
In the distance the puddles of the night
Shine red with blood in sight

The lies you lived are distant to me
Now gone for no one to see
I pass slowly in the left
Tonight you lost your last bet. (Chorus)

Free music from ME!

I have been talking up the benefits of Noisetrade.com to fellow artists, so I thought I would put my money or songs where my mouth has been.  Gypsy Soul was a digital released CD that I took down mainly because the revenues didn't balance the expense of keeping it up.  I'm not a touring artist but more of a tinkering songwriter; so why not take all but the best two songs that were sung by friends and put them on Noisetrade for everyone to enjoy.  If you are an artist who wants to cover it... live is free, and on cd recording you get paid for... licensing rules apply... but drop me a note, I'll cut you a deal to get covered a few times.

So here you go... http://www.noisetrade.com/luckydog  tip if you are so inspired, but it's not required.  My hope is that you enjoy it, and tell others.

Grace gives mercy

Recently I've working again on a tune I wrote awhile back.  The video is a mix I made.  I have this habit of sometimes having too much time on my hands and layer many other instruments on the first vocal and guitar track... Hope you like it.  Thanks

Grace by Dave Schipper © 2005 Rose Riversongs

She was a zesty mix of latin princess and call girl
A spicy whiplash with long flowing black  hair
Courted by all the boys within a hundred miles
She ropes them all and then frees them with a smile.

She is Grace, (4x)

Her daddy was assumed killed in a gang fight
The street adopted her and raised her right.
Now the all grown up girl stands tall
A ghetto flower in a world of asphalt

The hands of Grace filled with mercy
A gentle place, nothing fancy
To be with her is a blessing
Come unsure,  leave rejoicing

She has a crucifix right next to the tv
She’s known to grab your hand and weep
On the hallway wall is a shrine to her father
Pictures of wasted man but no mother

Days she spends her time at the soup kitchen
Nights she brightens  up the street with passion
She has the cred of the silent and the deadly
She gives more than a hand out, she give mercy

The Ghosts of St. Augustine

Ghosts of St. Augustine by Dave Schipper © 2006 Rose Riversongs

The ghosts of St. Augustine are an eerie sight
On rooftops, porches, and trees they come out at night
They walk this ancient ground, while their stories are told
By guides with lanterns, recounting tales of old.

The white gown of the bride
The candle in the night
The widow on the stairs
The renters Miss Faye scares

Ghosts of St. Augustine
Are the sights to be seen
Walk the cobblestone streets
And enjoy whom you meet

Pass the Bishop’s shrine and see the wayward bride
Who terrified those children tenting that night
Woke them with a cold hand brought screams and bone chills
Now she walks alone, mourning a love unfulfilled.

As guest G-Men talked, the innkeeper knew the plan
She gave the smuggler signal with lantern in hand.
Today her lost soul slips past the boarded entry
To the sea, Her hooded figure waves a sentry

Julia

Angie drove deep in my soul a few years back. Such an angel, and she left to prop her family in Colorado leaving me with the inspiration for this song.

Gypsy Soul

It's been a while since I've had a sponsor on the blog, so why not interrupt my Daily Song lenten journey with a commercial for ME.... yes, I took some time to record a live version of the title cut off my Gypsy Soul CD (digital released only). Here what I had to say on the video notes:

I was this close to not sharing this song because the vocals weren't perfect, then I thought... my vocals are never perfect. Gypsy Soul had to be the name of my iTunes released cd because I'm half Bohemian, and after I wrote the song one weekend after being inspired by a rare book I read of my wifes (albeit about 2 paragraphs)... the idea blossomed into such a fantasy night type of song. May we all enlist and allow our Gypsy Souls to take over every now and then.

Yes a better recorded version of this exists in iTunes... run out and buy it for a mere $.99...

please.. '-)

never a loss to beg... ha...

enjoy... I get more singing in tune as the song goes along... got to love the hat! Dave

California in my Mind

A little video on a favorite song from my Gypsy Soul iTune released CD. The song started as a harmless seductive play on a line from Allison Sattinger, but turned into desperate lonely song of a man wanting this haunting California image in his head. If you dice and slice reality into it's truths this song falls apart, so let's just let it play out for the imagery that was enhanced by a few of Allison's other songs too.

The cats are brought to you by Mr. Tangerine Man, Willie the Fat boy, and Lillith the Princess.

Call your manager, call your talent

Just call someone and tell them you've got the best dang undiscovered cross over Country Rock song you've heard in a long time. It's got passion,

"Grab hold my hand, grab on your heart
Grab on tight you know just where to start"

it's got divorce,

"Toss me a brew, toss me a life
Toss out the bill from my exwife."

it has sex but could be cleaned up for the top 40,

"Call it a week, call it a day
Call it what you like I just want to get paid (or laid)"

and it has the a of t and a,

"Smile and laugh, smile and relax
Smile to the gents looking from the back"

it wasn't written to be this cliches, it was written to be fun... with a little twist of Bob Seeger

Hey, I learned something new

If this works, here is my cover of St. James Infirmary available in iTunes on my CD Gypsy Soul; another great use to Grooveshark.com
