Wise old owl: Another gem of a song not "Official" yet... when you see them live, hope you hear the story of how Eva wrote this one... Sarah does give her grief about the wonderful lyrics too... sisterly love I'm sure

Vinyl Memories:... my Favorite...

The Battle of Evermore: This one doesn't carry "Official" in it's name but it's one that helped get me hooked on the band originally, and with over 40m views I don't think they need to re-record it.

Stained:  Great mean looks from the ladies ... makes me scream I'm sorry... come on what guy would do anything to disappoint any of these fine women?

On my Way:  Last year I got permission to put snippets in the Great River Folk Fest ad... love this song, it makes me want to get up and do something!

Tuscany: Not sure if this their official video because it doesn't have Sarah violin addition... but it's a stunning video put together by Weber Instruments.

When the Dragon came down: (can't wait to see what Sarah will do with this one some day... until then here's a great live video of the song, love how tight SHEL is live, the stops, the starts, the harmonies; and can Liza stop enjoying herself?)

Free Music from the Fest

Well maybe it's free for your email that we will share with the great artists that shared their music with us in hope that you will both tip us and become so impressed with their music you come to the fest.

I put it in Noisetrade.com and I have before praised the merits of this site... what a great way to discover new artists... SHEL for me was discovered in Noisetrade.

Our mix this year includes Tim O'Brien, David Wilcox, Sally Rogers, Pierce Pettis, The Barefoot Movement, Colin O'Brien, Grace Pettis, Claudia Schmidt, Patchouli, and Evergreen Grass Band... only Grace & Claudia had music in Noisetrade before we put this mix up. (Claudia was in our 2013 mix)

10 Top Covers of 2013

My top 10 covers of 2013*, oh my I love covers, including having bought Lissa Schneckenburger's CD called Covers, and the Tribute to John Denver, Music is You!  They really could have filled the entire top ten, but that would have been boring.  So what did the year hold? An incredible cover of Led Zeppelin's The Battle of Evermore, and my treat was hearing it live too... sounded a lot like this:



I of course should share the list:

Oh my there are 11... we'll eleven is better and louder than 10 and the last one you will not find anywhere because it was recorded live during our house concert.  A country tinged version with 3 part harmonies of the Beyonce's hit.

A few of these are covers of traditional songs like Tom Waits' cover of Shenadoah that I got off of a Noisetrade mix, or join the Dala Girls newsletter and get Red is the Rose, but if you spend $.99 on any song the one I think is the best is Nobody Knows.... It sure doesn't sound like this:




* Now anyone who knows my 2013 criteria is if I downloaded or bought it this year... I despise annual lists that forget about "LAST YEAR's" music like it has no value anymore to be discovered.

Simmerkane I and the Fall River Sybils - Chadwick Stokes

There is something about linking up with artists when they share their music freely with you.  You end up sharing your precious email to get on their mailing list, and you get some of their music.  Noisetrade.com is just a conduit for such an exchange.  I've met artists that I've gone to iTunes to buy more and more, and I've reconnected with favorites who have put out live tracks or other songs that I haven't feasted on. Then Brandi Carlile used it as a tease for her Bear Creek Cd release by giving you one song off of it.  It's addictive and I still probably haven't listened to every track I've downloaded in my time.

This weekend I quickly downloaded an artist I hadn't heard of Elin Ruth, and two I knew a little about Carrie Rodriguez and Chadwick Stokes.  Which brings me back to the blog title; Chadwick would not be in my iTunes if it weren't for my son buying the song "Coffee & Wine" below.  I always thought he was from England based on his accent, but he's from that hot bed of acoustic music, Boston.  I'm enjoying the Simmerkane... it's a re-release of early stuff, very stripped down.  Here's a write up of it.  So now Chadwick has my email, we'll see what news he'll send me.
