Rock and Roll Halloween by Bobby Bare Jr.

Here I go again shouting out a much better blog, MusicFog.com. Here's a great song and part of the story: This song is based on a real Halloween experience Bobby had in Atlanta. When he finished his set at Threadgills, we asked him for the title...Bobby didn't know. He said, "call it Night of 1000 Whores." But he changed his mind more than once, and finally settled on "Rock and Roll Halloween". Read the rest at: http://musicfog.typepad.com

Sunday Morning Coming Down

One of my all time favorite Cash and Kristofferson song.

Cowboy Train

"Aboard the Cowboy Train with Tom Russell, Gretchen Peters, Paul Zarzyski, Wylie Gustafson, Sourdough Slim, Barry Walsh and Thad Beckman - from Albuquerque, NM through Durango, Silverton and Pagosa Springs, Colorado to Chama New Mexico. September 2009.".... I wish I could have been there... if you would like to watch a recap, here's the link. http://blip.tv/file/2722256

Today Josh came up on my playlist at work and I mentioned him to a music literate guy, and stared blankly... oh... don't be blank, just enjoy.

Duckin' stones, a Protest song

I live my life duckin’ so many stones.
My hands are free, but I feel alone.
Both sides take aim at the weary bill.
Both exclaim there is a poison pill.
I suppose I should stop and listen.
Decipher which is God’s position.
I do expect that answer is neither
Jesus wouldn’t even need a breather.
He’d remind us of the question that stands,
When he needed help, “Did you lend a hand?”

I walk thru life duckin’ so many stones.
My way is clear and I don’t go alone.
I walk with the sons of Abraham,
Yes, Christian, Jew and Muslim
Side by side, homeless, poor and gay
Ducking the stones and words they say
Lest we forget the word cast in stone
Don’t idolize words from a radio throne
But let the words of Jesus help
Go out loving one another as yourself.

Go out and shout
Drop the stones, drop the stones.
But do not doubt, you’ll be
Duckin’ stones, duckin’ stones.

hey it should be a protest song, but who am I protesting? The ones on the left who seem to have a hole in their pocket or the self righteous on the Right who forgotten the truth that people are suffering. Frankly if we cancelled a few unneccesary military INVESTMENTS could we afford to pay for a little health care and reduce the subsidization that we insured are paying for in the higher costs from the uninsured.... oh there I go again doing the same thing the song is against... "Throwin Stones rather than just Duckin' Stones"

Sorry for talkin' politics... promise to be back to love and sex next post.

Music Torture?

Some say listening to Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Greg Brown, and Dave Zeman is torture too. HA. Aren't too many times I put myself in the same sentence as my heros.

Hey, I learned something new

If this works, here is my cover of St. James Infirmary available in iTunes on my CD Gypsy Soul; another great use to Grooveshark.com

Are women Crazy or just Smart...

A married couple is driving along a highway doing a steady 60 miles per hour. The wife is behind the wheel. Her husband suddenly looks across at her and speaks in a clear voice. 'I know we've been married for twenty years but I want a divorce.'
The wife says nothing, keeps looking at the road ahead but slowly increases her speed to 65 mph. The husband speaks again. 'I don't want you to try and talk me out of it,' he says, 'because I've been having an affair with your best friend, and she's a far better lover than you are.'

Again the wife stays quiet, but grips the steering wheel more tightly and slowly increases the speed to 75 . He pushes his luck. 'I want the house,' he says insistently.

Up to 80. 'I want the car, too,' he continues.

85 mph. 'And,' he says, 'I'll have the bank accounts, all the credit cards and the boat!'

The car slowly starts veering towards a massive concrete bridge. This makes him nervous, so he asks her, 'Isn't there anything you want?'

The wife at last replies in a quiet and controlled voice.
'No, I've got everything I need,' she says.
'Oh, really,' he inquires, 'so what have you got?'

Just before they slam into the wall at 85 mph,
the wife turns to him and smiles.

'The airbag.'

Now.. you decide... Crazy or Smart...

Mudcat.org

Hey... I want to increase your knowledge; and God knows mine needs it... so if you ever need to find traditional music, go to Mudcat.org It's a great site. If I was retired, I could spend days there before I get bored.

In case Music Fog doesn't exist anymore

It just might have to do with this:

Cool pin finding...

Hey I might have mentioned before that I coordinate an effort to sell off some our inventory on deals in Ebay. This little effort has made me look differently at any of inventory laying around; and of course I look for a little help from my friends. With that said, we have some cool cheap pencil offerings, some scrap book and children crafting ideas, and this week a CHRISTMAS Tree pin coming out of a failed sport pennant pin offering from a few years ago. So I was walking around with this really cool pennant shaped plated pin finding with rhinestones and said to a fellow woman co-worker, "I'm going to show this to my wife maybe she could make a cool jewelry pin out of it."... then she said, "Well turn it that way Dave and it's a Christmas Tree"... Hot digitty dog... she was right. Well I haven't sold any yet but the idea worked out.

Here a link to the post 2"x1" Christmas Tree / Pennant finding with rhinestones

And should I win awards for my sell copy?

This finding is an absolute gem. It was created for a sport pin project with quality in mind. The brass metal has a thin gold plate and a string of rhinestones attached. The military clutch and post has an additional anti-rotational spur so it will not spin when attached. We're selling them in lots of 6... yes a winning bid will receive 6 pin findings, and you can let your creativity flow. First my wife took a look at it and said Swarovski flat back gems & Bicones can be glued to it. Then she added a top Marguerite Lochrose flower bead and a Christmas tree was born. She said that she could easily see the clutch clipped from the back and earring posts added. At 2" it would not be the longest dangling earring known to womankind. Or talented painters could quickly make it a unique work... Then she said, it's beautiful just as gold, maybe as tiny ornaments. Well now back to the original premise... I as a sports fan could easily see the light now where a crafter would buy only their favorite team's colors... SAY GREEN and GOLD... and the pin could be worn in either the horizontal pennant or vertical tree shape. Now with just a little more imagination it could be a megaphone shape for your favorite cheerleading coach or team. We'll post this in both an auction format and buy now so first dabble with a small order and come back for a larger order. While we think we have a lot of these... I bet they'll be gone fast

I'd leave me too...

Ok... some day I know I'll meet Audrey since she has family about 2 hours from my house concert.... until then I'll just watch these videos and smile at that Austrailian Country sound.

The Pines Saturday Jan 30th

Right now... the plan is 8:00 and clear skies for a beautiful date night in January, so why not head over to a house concert known for intimate concerts where the artist gets to know the audience. Yes the hosts, Dave and Lori will have some fresh cookies, decaf coffee, and maybe some hot apple cider. Feel free to bring your own beverage, no corking charges here, HA!

Now the artist... The Pines... let's start with their website bio:

In a world swimming in singer/songwriters, it's difficult to rise above the masses and create a truly unique sound that captures ears and stimulates the mind. The Pines are a band that has taken on this feat, honing their musical craft to near perfection with a sound that wavers on the edge of traditional acoustic/roots music, but embraces the nuances of today's indie-rock and blues music.

Meeting in a Mexican barrio in Arizona, fellow Iowans David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey began playing music together, forming The Pines. Committing to a musical career, they returned to their Midwestern roots and settled in Minneapolis, a music haven that has launched the careers of such folk and rock legends as Bob Dylan, The Jayhawks and The Replacements.

In 2004 The Pines released their debut self-titled album on the Iowa-based Trailer Records, establishing themselves as an emerging force in the roots music world with their haunting blend of indie-rock, folk, and blues with intelligent lyrics. In 2007 The Pines released Sparrows in the Bell on the world renowned acoustic/roots label Red House Records. The album had critics buzzing and was named one of the top roots releases of 2007 by Q Magazine. With the release of Tremolo, , their second release on Red House, The Pines continue to show their growth as artists as well as an unparalleled wisdom in their songwriting and musicianship.

The son of Greg Brown's producer and sideman Bo Ramsey, Benson was surrounded by folk and blues music and continues to let those influences shine, even on louder electric songs. David also has a deep love for traditional music, and together the two of them craft music that evokes the ancient while incorporating newer rock and pop grooves. Both strong writers and musicians, David and Benson have distinct voices that complement each other, causing audiences and critics alike to tout them as a powerful young force in American roots music. Steadily touring around the country, The Pines have shared the stage with some of the biggest names in music including Bon Iver, The Holmes Brothers, Jolie Holland, The Arcade Fire, and Spider John Koerner.

Now to that I would add that after Lori and I saw them at the Simply Folk 30th Anniversary show up at the BigTop, we both said WOW...now wouldn't you want to see them at the house concert... YEE HAW... they're coming.

More to come, and here's hoping you come and here's a map.

Grooveshark... I'm a convert

Grooveshark... I'm a convert and now a contributor... Yes just this week my buddy Tim showed me this site was a great way to learn a song that you may not want to buy. And I used it instead of looking thru all my cds to find that Ashokan Farewell that I needed to re-learn for a church gig.

It's a site where you make your own internet radio program by search thru 1000's of songs. Of course the cool feature is to search a favorite song and listen to the wealth of covers for the song. I thought it might be illegal, and it does have it's doubters, but thru this Wikipedia article, I found they have a licensing deal with EMI... cool beans. So I searched my stuff and it wasn't out there... so I added a few songs.

I'm an ASCAP writer and performer... go search Dave Zeman at http://listen.grooveshark.com/ and just maybe I'll get a nickel royalty check some day! HA. I'll frame it.

Talkin Sexes

Ok folks, it’s plain to see, that I’m talkin’ differences ‘tween you and me.
Or should I say them and us, you know vagina versus the old penis.
I’ve been around a time or two, enough to see a closet full of shoes
But when I went to write ‘em down, I was worried to be shipped out of town.
You know Rush Limbaugh style, angry, confused, blabbering all the while.

Now this shouldn’t be an editorial bit, so I used THE google and McCained it.
You know in this digital age, you just search and copy some body else’s page.
So armed with a laptop and coffee, I got my windows to look at me.
Point and click info by the ton, ohhhh better put the adult filters on.
Just incase you try this at home, don’t try that with thing with foam.

Back to work and just like I thought, lists and lists of haves and have nots.
Some pretty scientific stuff, when I thought camo versus pink fluff.
There’s left brain / right brain, and why women explain and explain
There’s x y, mars and venus, and oh yeah then right back to the penis
So who here before the age nine, played you show me your I’ll show you mine?

Mumble… after age nine… hmmm look me up sometime….

Hair style is difference I relate, hell mine been the same since 8.
Yes all that time to get ready, and you just better notice Freddy.
She’s worked hard at getting it just right, even if it’s a bun pulled tight.
Darlin you look good tonight, no, no really I meant outta sight.
Sure the game is on, but I looked at you really, really, really.. hey he’s gone.

So if I make it through this song, and married to my favorite one.
It just means that difference attract, and then find a way to react.
Most women are saints you know, and successful guys will surely show
Their pride and joy that brings them dinner, after they said she looks thinner
Yes indeed, I meant every word, thanks for the dinner hun.

Meander..

I meander down these streets
Soaking up the history
This little river town is home
It’s beauty is before me.

There were no building rules then
Do whatever that was up your hat.
Funny, just like God did with us
“Let’s try something like that!”

As I do with the people I meet
I peer deep in the house’s eyes
To find the brilliance or darkness
No facts here, but I editorialize.

The lawn unkempt and broken panes,
I could really restore her.
A tiny bungalow with cool back deck
I absolutely adore her.

A grand old two story brick,
Now this one intimidates me
A garden and fat cat in the window,
I wish there was room for me.

Life is too short to waste
But if meander you way thru
You’ll have a chance to catch life
From a character or two.

Finding You by Tom Russell

After an iMix post... it's so relavent to hear Tom's intro to this song... as described in the youtube:

The last song on side 1 of his new album, Blood and Candle Smoke, performed with Thad Beckman at the Beachland Tavern in Cleveland, Ohio on Wednesday, October 7, 2009; the eighth song of his first set.

Paint me in Love

Yes... talk to me long enough and you'll know that I'm addicted to music and to flirting with women. My basement room is filled with 3000 LPs, 500 Cds, and too many cassettes that I have no idea what to do with. Upstairs, my lovely wife is napping; but inside my head are voices and faces. Sometimes they escape and force me to buy their music, but now just like in my head... it's all digital. HA... now join me in my head and listen to the voices. The first song is my single release of Paint me in Love.... my thanks to Tim Kolek who's piano added just the right class to a song I finished for Valentine's day present for my wife Lori.

The Killer in Me by Amy Speace

CD Reviews are not typically what I post in page because I rather entertain you with a song, a story, a sponsor, or maybe a prose. Well today, let's turn our focus to one of the two new people I've discovered this year, Amy Speace. This year saw a release of a CD called The Killer in Me... and it's one that Amy admits is more soul searching and dark than some of her previous material. A statement like that makes me skeptical because I prefer music that are stories and not all depressing. Well I'm a proud owner five of the songs from the CD and I love what I've selected. (Yes it is iTunes) Maybe I'll go feast on more later... here's the playlist so far:

The Killer in Me... wow the hit and a potential big playlist item for Americana Radio Stations. Great structure and you can reach out the woman in the song and shake her and say wake up... you don't need to follow these dirtballs.

Haven't Learned a Thing... Another reality of a kid who keeps trying. I love the cello in the mix.

Dog Days... The song paints a summer memory, rich in color and smells of summer. Amy's voice beckons you to lay down with her; ok it sounds like a offer she meant.

Something more the rain... Actually a nice upbeat and positive song; with a great country type chorus or break.

I met my love... great country ballad with guitar and harmony work that reminds you of a John Haitt piece; but it's Ian Hunter from the old Mott the Hoople days.

Here's another review of her cd. http://podsafeaudio.com/jamroom/bands/3052/
Photo from her website.

And don't you expect that MusicFog would be all over her? Well they were:

2009 Great River Folk Fest

Today I was organizing my photos when I saw I had inadvertantly taken a movie of the belly dancer at the 2009 Great River Folk Fest in LaCrosse WI. Boy that was one cold weekend, but none of the performers complained. The lineup was great Peter Mayer, Pert Near Sandstone, Greg Herriges, and Tom Peace. Of course I had to list Amy Speace as the surprise of the concert to me... not only a good performer she came across as a person you could have a beer with.. who knows maybe she'll be President someday. Then of course I have to highlight, Leela and Ellie Grace. I got my mug taken with them as they played at our church on Sunday.

Ellie Mae.

The first time I saw you, I thought it was a dream
Dancin all around me, just like a Cajun Queen.
You were in my prayers Lord, protect her everyday
What a little darlin, that little Ellie Mae

Ellie Mae, keep that smile upon your face.
Ellie Mae, dance around the room with grace, Ellie Mae
Your God’s gift from above, I give my hand in love, Ellie Mae

So now some years have passed, that smile’s still on your face.
Still a little angel, full of love and grace.
All my prayers were answered, your with a boy today.
A strong and lovin’ man, for little Ellie Mae.

Ellie Mae, keep that smile upon your face.
Ellie Mae, dance around the room with grace, Ellie Mae
He’s God’s gift from above, give him your hand in love, Ellie Mae.

The next time I see you, a smile still on your face.
Your Sis on the banjo, new Dad upon the bass.
Harmonies a flowin’ and what a joy to say.
Twin girls ‘round the feet of little Ellie Mae.

Ellie Mae, keep that smile upon your face.
Ellie Mae, dance around the room with grace, Ellie Mae
Their God’s gift from above, give them your hand in love, Ellie Mae.

This Warehouse Girl

This warehouse girl
In her denim blues and t-shirt
She picks me up
Tapes my cardboard heart together

This warehouse girl
She catches the guys in deep stares
Brown days and nights
Oh she wasn’t handled with care

Punch me in
Pack me right
At shift’s end
Wrap me tight

This warehouse girl
She scanned my heart with dark eyes
And checked me out
Boxed up tightly with her smooth lies

This warehouse girl
Lives a life that others whisper
She ships me out
Down the line to a new lover

Wow.... can I die and be reborn as MusicFog.com? I am sooooo envious, but at the same time thankful.

Fade Away by Samantha Farrell

Samm has just posted an absolutely soft, sensual acoustic video of her song on one of the best CD's I've listened to this year. Oh yeah, she's the one on the left.

Fade Away into the beauty of the song, the woman, and the breathless anticipation to just fade away.

Jersey City Parking Violations Authority

I heard Amy Speace do this song at a workshop at the LaCrosse Great River Folk Fest. I hounded her to see if she had a recording of it... she didn't but said oh there's a YouTube of it somewhere.... Ha... she needed a cheat sheet too during the workshop. Must not play it too often. Love the story both in the song and her story she told of playing it for the City Cops as the first time.

A jersey gril with hazel eyes, who'd know? or were they green?

The Belleville Outfit

Last night I was listening to "It's a Good Day" and my wife said, what are you listening to jazz for?... Wow, there you have it. Good music transcends labels. I never would have even thought of the song as jazz. Yet the Country Swingness of the music and the liveliness of the band in the video posted earlier in this blog from Music Fog never had me thinking I was listening to Jazz.

Well today I was still trying to learn more about this group that has captured my imagination, and is starting to take my money song by song; and I ran into this great review. I have added them as my friend in myspace, who knows maybe a future house concert?... hmmm they are a big group... outside?

The review is at http://twangville.com/1620/the-belleville-outfit-live-at-yoshis/ The two parts of the review that got me is their "Gypsy influence" and "Led by the torch-singing style of lead singer and fiddler Phoebe Hunt"... torch yep... she's lit my fire... HA.
