Helen Hunt & Mixed Tapes?

So why does the beautiful Helen Hunt show up in the Zemmy Show Blog? and who uses cassette tapes yet?

Well one of my favorite blogs, When you Wake has this great section where they show off some really cool covers, like Dylan gone Twang. It reminded me of one of my favorite movies where Jack Nicholson makes a whole bunch of mixed tapes to attract Helen Hunt during a road trip in As Good as it Gets. What a fantastic movie, and yes for all you dedicated readers, I've been in love with Helen Hunt for a long time.

Proud Dad.....

Of course I never was a guy that took a lot of videos of my son, but now with today's technology making it possible in these little digital cameras, I recorded his last concert with the Holmen Orchestra. Dustin is an excellent violinist, but the orchestra is full of them so it makes the night of listening to them so enjoyable. Troy Birdsong does an excellent job with the group, and they are off to Wisconsin's State Solo and Ensemble this weekend with the piece called America's Cup, and it's the one included on the video below. Don't need to travel far, LaCrosse Wi... HA....

Jukebox by Heather Waters

Oh.... I so love this song. It's a beautifully written country ballad by Adam Levy but to hear Heather sing that last verse, and she holds that picture tight... I get goose bumps. I'm working on learning this one, and I kind of did, so here we go... I'm going to call it my Heather Waters guitar audition tape... oh wait... I can do better... HA.

Really now... go find the real stuff over at http://heatherwaters.com/ or better yet... go buy it in iTunes.

Wildy's World

In a constant search for good music blogs, I found a great review site. Their pledge: If you are interested in having your album reviewed on Wildy's World, or if you're interested in advertising your next release on this page, please contact us at wildysworld@gmail.com. Reviews are free and advertising rates are dirt cheap! I just might have to send them a Zeman CD. You will note that they are now in the Shout Out link section on the right, with a bunch of good other sites to explore.

Creativ Life - A new sponsor

Now in reality I just ran into this site, creativlife.blogspot.com, and I was wowed by it's layout and pictures of quality items, I just had to share it. Who knows... when I'm looking for just that special item I might look her up. Just look at these beautiful pictures.

Another vote for Allison

Here's a blog I ran into....

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2008 http://www.themusicmeow.com/2008/11/allison-sattinger.html

Allison Sattinger
For the past several months, I have been listening to singer songwriter Allison Sattinger. I first found her among Terra Naomi's top MySpace friends. I figured if she was liked by one of my favorite YouTube-turned-major-label artists, I would probably like her as well. After listening to all the songs on her MySpace playlist and watching nearly every video on her YouTube account, I realized that "like" was the wrong word—I absolutely adore this woman's music.

Allison's lyrics are heartfelt and her music is piano pop with a Gospel edge. She writes about life, love, and love lost. No matter what she's singing, whether an original or cover, you always believe everything that passes her lips. Recently she did a cover of Billy Joel's "For the Longest Time" that had me in tears. Reading the comments posted beneath the YouTube video, I found I was not the only one touched by her rendition of the song.

Now if you are not familiar with Terra who is Allison's close friend in LA... here's one of my favorite songs of her's... and you haven't watched it... get going... this video has had 3,000,000+ views... where have you been... HA..

Black T-Shirts by Slaid Cleeves

I ran into Slaid from the oddest of marketing gimmics, but it worked. iTunes has collections that are called Essentials, so I meandered through Essentials in Folk Music or Americana or something like that and ran into that story telling voice that I love so much in Broke Down. Since I've dabbled through a few of records, and bought the CD called Unsung. I have never been disappointed. Today I ran into the second video from an account called Music Fog I highly recommend if you like good acoustic music subscribe to this YouTube account, or even go to their website, http://www.musicfog.com/ where they add stories to the videos.

So here's the Broke Down story that got me hooked:

Wild Women Don't get the Blues

I was reminded today about this song when I was thinking about a story that Hope Waits wrote in her blog about her wild adventures in New Orleans. Well she'll be playing live next week there, and if you are in the area, don't miss it... Here's a note from Hope.

Hi there! I wanted to let you know I'll be playing a show in the Big Easy this coming Monday. One day after the first weekend of Jazz Fest, (April 27th @ 10PM) you can find me at the Circle Bar, right on St. Charles, sipping a hurricane and singing tunes from my album, and tons of other fun melodies. This is a full band show, and should be tons of fun! The show is free. Be sure to bring a friend, and wear your best dancing shoes! And if you do not live in the New Orleans area, but you know of someone who does, send them my way! I promise not to dissapoint!

Ciao!

-Hope Waits

God I love this woman, her voice, her family background, and she has been kind to this old fart... I even got a signed cd liner after I bought her cd on iTunes. Some day... we're going to meet up at the Crackerbarrel... I'll eat any grits that she thinks I need to eat... HA...

So I wished her well. and told her "Wild women don't get the blues, but watch yourself in the big easy, stay among friends." So here is a group of women that tour under the famous title of Ida Cox's song.

Wild Women Don't Have The Blues

soundclip

by Ida Cox
recording of July 1924
from Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 2 (1924-1925) (Document 5323), copyright notice

I hear these women raving 'bout their monkey men
About their trifling1 husbands and their no good friends
These poor women sit around all day and moan
Wondering why their wandering papa's don't come home
But wild women don't worry, wild women don't have no blues

Now when you've got a man, don't never be on the square
'Cause if you do he'll have a woman everywhere
I never was known to treat no one man right
I keep 'em working hard both day and night
'Cause wild women don't worry, wild women don't have their blues

I've got a disposition and a way of my own
When my man starts kicking I let him find another home
I get full of good liquor, walk the streets all night
Go home and put my man out if he don't act right
Wild women don't worry, wild women don't have their blues

You never get nothing by being an angel child
You better change your ways and get real wild
I wanna tell you something, I wouldn't tell you a lie
Wild women are the only kind that really get by
'Cause wild women don't worry, wild women don't have their blues

_________
Note 1: trifling, to talk in a jesting or mocking manner or with intent to delude or mislead. Also, to treat someone or something as unimportant.

April iPod Musings...

I love these iMixes that you are allowed to publish back to the whole world. I can SCREAM, this is what I recently bought and love or this is what I started listening to again... and now the world knows.

Ok maybe three people who read it will. Here's the link that will work if you have iTunes loaded on your computer.

Ian Tyson at 75

A few blogs earlier, you might have stopped by the Norah Rendell & Brian Miller link to a CBC concert. Well I was digging around in that site and found one of my favorite legend cowboy singer (yes Clay over Michael), Ian Tyson. I was saddened to hear about his recent voice problems, but now he sounds like the Cowboy version of Rod McKuen... and grew up loving Rod's poetry and his singing crooner songs like, "Listen to the Warm"

Here's the write up from the concert:

Few songwriters have earned the respect to the degree Ian Tyson has. Through more than 40 years of music, he's told us of the pain of love, the dignity of purpose, and the joy of renewal, while helping define what it means to be Canadian.

A few years ago, Tyson damaged his voice while performing. Soon after, he contracted a virus that halted any further recovery. It appeared Ian Tyson's recording and performing days were at an end. But that wouldn't be the 'Cowboy way'. Urged on by his good friend Corb Lund, Tyson wrote and recorded a CD of highly personal songs, 'Yellowhead to Yellowstone and other Love Stories'.

This concert, recorded at Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove, Alberta, was part of Tyson's bi-annual, sold out, 5 night run at the venue.

Heather Waters is now in Genius... way to go kid

I am a huge use of iTunes mainly because I have never felt Best Buy or Wally World is not my best choice for music... ok yes CD Baby does now meet the need for eclectic tastes like mine, but com'on... I have spent more money on more variety of artist. My current iTunes has over 10 days of music to play end to end. So I was totally intrigued by Apple's addition of this Genius which will create a mix of 25 songs that should "Go Together" if you pick one song. Since I think Heather Waters is an under marketed and unknown wonderful artist, I've been watching to see if I click on one of her songs off the CD Zemmy Award of the year, what would come up. Well it's been a few months, but enough people have Heather in their playlists for them to calculate a Genius Playlist... and here it is.

Funny it found my few Rilo Kiley songs when Heather compares herself to the illegitimate child of Rilo and Emmy Lou Harris; but it didn't find any of my Emmy Stuff... Hey did I mention that Heather is coming back to the Bluff View in October?

A couple covers...

A song that Chip Taylor and Kendel wrote, and the line in the 3rd verse that goes, "Crying Rearview Mirror Tears" became the title for Kendel's first solo cd produced by Chip on Trainwreck records.

I quickly just overplayed this song two years ago when I first got it... what a simply sad and wistful tale of a girl abused who runs away. Having only one son, we preach at him to teach all women with respect. I do understand all the ways of the world are pushing against men behaving themselves with common dignity, love and respect for women. I pray we make strides daily.

Now I had a few minutes and to think of the most favorite song I've been playing lately, it was a Tom Paxton song that our group re-learned for a 50th anniversary party. While I an lp of Tom singing this song, it was nothing until he sang it in a trio with Bob Gibson and Ann Hills... find this rare cd recording of a live show..it's awesome. I would dedicate this to my angel friend Allison Sattinger and her beau Anthony would recently moved 6 hours north LA... but they are always home.

Kendel Carson & Chip Taylor on FoxLA

About 3 years ago I found Kendel in the MySpace world, and I have been wowed over frequently. I did have her sneak me a signed CD before it was released. I can't wait until she wins some big award, or when I can finally run into her with her other great group she plays with, The Paperboys. I of course still follow her blog and just had to share this link to see her and my favorite old fart, Chip Taylor. Jon Voight brother, the same guy who wrote "Wild Thing".

So this http://www.myfoxla.com/dpp/entertainment/music/Singer_Songwriter_Chip_Taylor_GDLA_20090416 isn't in You Tube, how about some screen captures to excite you.

Of course ... I do still think it'll be tough for her to top, "I like trucks"... BIG Trucks..and as all my readers know, I've been deeply in love with Kendel now for 2+ years... HA.

So in honor of their CD release party, here's a photo montage to The Stupid Kiss.. Kristin on lead.

Yes I resemble the Wikipedia definitions of fanatical... HA.

Fanaticism is an emotion of being filled with excessive, uncritical zeal, particularly for an extreme religious or political cause or in some cases sports, or with an obsessive enthusiasm for a pastime or hobby. Philosopher George Santayana defines fanaticism as "redoubling your effort when you have forgotten your aim"[1]; according to Winston Churchill, "A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject". By either description the fanatic displays very strict standards and little tolerance for contrary ideas or opinions.

New blog for House Concert site

Surprise... I've started yet another blog... this one will be strictly news and postings about the house concert series that I run called Bluff View Concerts. I just have been inkling to do this, and creating Allison's poster pushed me to jump at it. Now I will still post some teasers over in the Show blog, but this time... go on over there you really want to read it, don't you?

Hell Yeah... by Alfonso Velez

Ok it's Easter and I should not tell people this is a great song, but it is. Alfonso and I have been myspace friends for a while. I have deep appreciation for that high male voice and his writing is Damn good too... Hell yeah. (this one for the ladies... He's cute too.)

This blog needs a few more Roses....

So a few weeks ago we had Ashley Rose, so next my favorite pop queen from Vancouver, Rose Reiter. Dave liking pop music? Well ok you got me on that one, but she really has some excellent soft ballads, and did you see how beautiful she is? I admit my sin of falling easily in love, but looks are really just part of the equation. Eyes, passion, spirit, and yes humor all are essential parts, and then I've effectively gone.

Her blogs have been mixed with fictional intrigue, personal updates, poetry, and yes recipes; and that's what made me hang around. Now I hear she'll use her blog to tease us with her fictional novel she's writing. But I do love her passion she brings to her music, and she did what good people do... she hung around and made friends with me. Well enough that I can appreciate her kindness.

Her father recently passed away, so she hasn't blogged for ages, this week... two new ones including a recipe I thought I would share with you straight from her blog:

And in case you're wondering what I did end up eating for supper - a very simple and easy Italian dish:
Tonight's recipe: 10 minutes to make. Seriously. And it rocks with Chianti
Savoury Mediterranean Angel hair pasta
3/4 C Extra virgin olive oil
3 - 6 cloves of garlic - sliced thin (I used 4 tonight)
Basil leaves - a few. Sliced. (you can use scissors - easy breezy)
1/2 teaspoon of dried chili skin- the dried chillies - just grab the skin and crumble enough to your taste. (If you're new to this, then just use dried cayenne powder - just a pinch. And you can avoid this spice if you want).
About 3 - 6 kalamata Olives - Pit them and slice thin
About a cube of feta cheese - crumbled
About a cube of goat cheese (if you like - totally optional)
Salt
(And if you want: Add a few sliced artichokes & sliced sundried tomatoes)
Angel hair pasta - enough for 2 people.
1 organic bottle of Chianti. For drinking only. Be sure to open it and pour yourself a glass.
How:
Boil water for angel hair pasta - but since it cooks so fast, don't cook the pasta until you're about 3 minutes away from serving. (Optional: Add lots of salt to the water to flavour.)
Take out a medium size saucepan and put about 3/4 C of your olive oil into it and add a few shakes of salt (to your taste). Low - Medium heat at the highest - tonight, I kept it under medium and turned it down to low after about 2 minutes.
Now, slice 3-4 cloves of garlic - really thin. (You can use more if you'd like).
Add the garlic to the heated olive oil - and watch! Don't allow the oil to brown the garlic too much - just slow and low heat.
Add the olives and the basil to the oil. Turn off the heat and allow the heat in the pan to cook the rest.

Cook your angel hair pasta - should take less than 3 minutes. Drain, put into a bowl, and immediately pour all the olive oil sauce over the pasta. Add feta, goat cheese, and I like to serve parmesan at the table.

Now how about a song? She's got a great percussion track on this to highlight her vocal skills.

Brandi Carlile

Brandi Carlile playing an acoustic version "The Story" off her album of the same name.... this version is close to the version I like which is Allison Sattinger's cover which is the first song I heard. Yes she introduced me to this wonderful artist.

Now Brandi has the embedding disabled, so when you click on the link below the picture and it will take you to You Tube. This is the way the song should have been recorded, and not that grunge soft then screaming loud original version.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y72jRaoRvHs

Then watch Allison's... I can't wait to see her in May... this is on my request list.

Classic Skit

I just had to share this video I watched on When You Wake's blog.

Climax at the Opera

Now who said that the eclectic Zemmy show wouldn't put a touch of class and opera in your life.

Natalie Dessay and Laurent Naouri perform "Il m'a Semble sur mon Epaule (The Fly Duet)" from Offenbach's "Orphée aux Enfers."

My wife recommended I watch this to the end... it's pretty cute.... and I typically can't stand opera... HA.

Social Clubs

Yikes...too funny... I was a guest at a Rotary Club meeting with lots of good people and they have done great things, but like all clubs I was drawn to ask, "Now why are you doing this?"

What's the Buzz...

Recently I was digging around to try find the Vinyl import I did a few years back on my Jesus Christ Superstar record. I grew up Roman Catholic and I proudly went to 8 years of private school. Now I'm proud to be a Lutheran within the ELCA world... whatever I am I feel I'm part of the whole Christian world though many of my closest friend's are in church's where they can't share communion with me. It makes me think Jesus would be so dreadfully sad. Why... we share the same hope but aren't friends enough to share the same body and blood of our Saviour. That is exactly why I take a lot of patience with people trying to comprehend Muslim faith and the contradiction of extremism and faith. I think Jesus abhorred extremism of the leaders, and so do I.... so let's just enjoy a great video from Andrew Lloyd Wright's incredible rock opera.

The Wolf Den: Spring Valley Rose

From Contributing Editor Clay Riness
Editor In Chief,
The Weary Wolf Journal

Somewhere around 2001 my old friend Paul Kogut informed the world he was getting married and a date had been set for a big, outdoor wedding, right on the trout stream, at his place in Spring Coulee. He asked me if I would sing something during the ceremony. I don't make a practice of playing weddings, so I did what I always do when a friend asks me to bring my voice to a wedding. I told him I would do it if he trusted me to choose the music...non-negotiable.

He agreed, smiling. Of course, I was going to write a song for their wedding, and that would be my gift. It was something they would never expect.

Paul is a passionate lover of military history, an active Civil War re-enactor, and most everyone who knows him knows that about him. My take on a love song for him and his bride was to frame it in the setting of a civil war soldier returning home to his beautiful, waiting wife. That's how Spring Valley Rose was penned.

The wedding experience was awesome. Before I sang the song I told the congregation that anyone who really knew Paul knew that he loved two things: the woman he was standing with...and Civil War Re-enactment. Cracked them all up. The song was a huge success. Everyone told me I hit the nail square on the head with my unique and unusual little gift.

The next year, I came out of retirement and began performing concerts again, and I performed Spring Valley Rose for a full house at an intimate concert for the Rustic Valley Concert Series. Paul and Kim were in house and actually danced to their wedding song. I stumbled across the recording of that concert a few days ago, footage never before released. I hadn't even heard it since it was recorded in 2002. It was good to hear.

Listen to Spring Valley Rose:

Spring Valley Rose
by
Clay Riness

In a valley so green she is waiting,
In her calico dress by the stream.
For her true love to come promenading
Up the trail to his Spring Valley dream.

She loves a soldier. He loves no other.
She waits for him every bright and shining day.
He's just a soldier, a northbound stranger,
With so many miles to go, bound for home, but he knows
With his Spring Valley Rose he will stay.

She's the fresh blooming rose of the valley.
She's the warm evening sun that sets in May.
She's the soft gentle rain that feeds the garden.
She's the new bride of spring every day.

She loves a soldier. He loves no other.
She waits for him every bright and shining day.
He's just a soldier, a northbound stranger,
With so many miles to go, bound for home, but he knows
With his Spring Valley Rose he will stay.

Oh they say she was the pride of old Chicago,
The fairest girl in that cold and windy town.
But she traveled to the hills of old Wisconsin
And she settled with the new love that she found.

She loves a soldier. He loves no other.
She waits for him every bright and shining day.
He's just a soldier, a northbound stranger,
With so many miles to go, bound for home, but he knows
With his Spring Valley Rose he will stay.

Crooked Still - Aoife O'Donovon

Angels are overrated...

Tonight I bring you the depths of bitterness is lines of words.
Back in 2005, I'm not sure what inspired my contempt of Angels...

I do compare many to the wonderful heavenly beings that I believe exist. But they aren't the TV ones, no... they are the real ones who touch our lives with the Master's hands. So if you don't want to read the bitterness I re-discovered tonight at my writing blog, I took a rare quiet opportunity to record it.

Friday, April 3, 2009

Hey Clay ... glad for your big night.

Today I tried one more time on the phone to get a ticket for my blog co-writer's concert at the Pump House, and sold out... just like I saw the night before. Maybe this is the coolest thing I've heard of in along time; a folk artist packing the house. Way to go Clay. I'm of course holding out for a private house concert with him and Michael Martin Murphy. Yes ... in my dreams, but I've had many dreams come true.

Including tonight, what you say? Yes our 18 year old son working and absolutely no other commitments, Lori and I had a normal Friday night from the past... a little conversation, a little intimacy, and a night out... boy.. we have, we did, and we still love each other.. So don't worry when I fawn all other my latest artist or actress, it's material for the next lyric or when Lori leaves the world before me. HA... she love's my rendition of my chasing women with a walker....HA.

So tonight.. here's Lori and my favorite song from a legend we've seen a few times... can you believe it had over 1 million views on YouTube?

Anaïs Mitchell Sings "If Moon Was Cookie"

From Guest Correspondent Heather of LyricalVenus.com

I've been a big fan of Anaïs Mitchell for quite a while now. She recently did three shows in the Pacific Northwest as a special guest of the Portland Cello Project. Apparently they learned the Sesame Street song "If Moon Was Cookie" because they thought PBS was going to be taping them. PBS postponed, but Anaïs sang it with them anyway. How adorable is this?! And when did Cookie Monster ever get to sing with so many cellos?!

Corner Gas

Recently Lynn & Terry turned us on to Corner Gas, we love sitcoms, but have been choosy in the past. We were stuck on all the typical good ones, MASH, Cheers, Sienfeld, but now we like Scrubs, The Office, and 30 Rock. Of course it has all the trappings of a good sitcom, but it's based in a old gas stations with a cafe attached. Of course now I'm in love with Gabrielle Miller and when I told Lynn that she said, "You and all the truckers in Canada.".... Terry trucks into Canada, HA.... Enjoy... I am amazed and excited that it looks like every episode is up in You Tube. You should watch them in order, but "I Love Lacey"... so I'm posting this one. It does give you a real sense of each character and it does recap pretty well their quirks. It was the season finale.

Move over Pam Beesley, you have competition.
